Foreign Students Language Requirements

Language requirements for all students applying for admission

Students who have completed their high school diploma or have a university degree in English may be admitted to the university without language requirements. Students who did not previously study in English must take any among the TOEFL, the TOEIC, the IELTS, the Cambridge Exam, the CEFR, or the NIU’s English as Second Language Test. The later test is more affordable than the TOEFL and the other standardized tests. The minimum score required for admission are the following:

For Doctorate Programs

TOEFL Paper Based: 550 or above

TOEFL Computer Based: 213 or above

TOEFL Internet Based: 79 or above

TOEIC: 690 or above

IELTS: 6.5 or above

Cambridge Exam: CAE or CPE

CEFR: C1 or C2

NIU Test of English: 70%      

All Other Degrees

            Students may receive admission if their score is the following:

TOEFL Paper Based: 513 or above

TOEFL Computer Based: 183 or above

TOEFL Internet Based: 65 or above

TOEIC: 685 or above

IELTS: 6.0 or above

Cambridge Exam: FCE

CEFR: B2 or above

NIU’s Test of English: 60%  or above

            Students may be conditionally admitted if their test scores are judged too low by the university. Students conditionally admitted will take the following two courses

            ESL 200 English Grammar and Vocabulary I (2 credits)

            ESL 201 English Writing I (2 credits)

            Students must pass the two courses NIU’s Test of English in order to become fully admitted into the university.

Applicants for admission to a program offered in a NIU brick and mortar campus (in the future), will have to show proof of financial support before being awarded a form I-20, which may allow them to apply for a student visa. Minimum funds required figure on the tuition and financial table (see NIU Catalog and in this website).

General Requirements for all Students Beyond the Language Requirements

Each student must review the detailed requirements that are listed in their program description to avoid missing program specific requirements.

Doctorate Program Admission Requirements
a) To be admitted a student must possess a bachelor` degree or a master degree from a university or a college accredited by a government or an accreditation institution approved by a government

  1. To be admitted a student must possess a bachelor degree or a master degree from a university or a college accredited or licensed by a government or an accreditation institution approved by a government
  2. Applicants applying, holding only a bachelor degree, must have a GPA of 3.0 or above; or pass the Nova International University Graduate Aptitude Test (NIU GSAT). They may also submit results of the GMAT or the GRE in place of the NIU GSAT
  3. Applicants with a master degree in business or management from a non accredited university must pass the Nova International University Graduate Aptitude Test (NIU GSAT) online which is less expensive compared to other tests(GMAT, GRE,..). They may also submit results of the GMAT or the GRE in place of the NIU GSAT
  4.  Applicants must submit a letter explaining the reasons why they have decided to apply for the DBA program. In the letter, the applicant must briefly describe their background, their long term objectives, and how the DBA will help them reach the objectives.
  5.  Applicants must submit their resume
  6. Applicants must submit their official transcripts or certified copies of their official transcripts before starting any course. The university will verify the accuracy of the degree. For that reason, applicants must submit the current address of the institution that had awarded their degrees. If the institution does no longer exist, applicants must submit the address of the institution at the time that the degree was awarded and the government institution that must verify the degree. Unofficial transcript may be initially accepted
  7.  Applicants must submit two letters of recommendations (in the form provided by the university) written by previous teachers, mentors, supervisors, co-workers, or managers
  8. Applicants must meet all other requirements of the doctoral degree into which they are applying for admission

Master Program and Master Certificate Admission Requirements

          For all master degree programs except the Executive MBA (EMBA)

  1. Applicants must have a bachelor degree or an equivalent from an accredited or an authorized university in the field of their planned study.
  2. Applicants with an undergraduate GPA lower than 2.5 with an undergraduate degree from an unaccredited university will either take The Nova International University (NIU) Graduate Study Aptitude Test (GSAT) or take either the GMAT or the GRE.
  3. A resume (or a curriculum vitae) detailing work experiences, skills, and education
  4. An essay/letter describing the reasons why the candidate has decided to apply for admission into the program (one to two pages)
  5. Applicants who did not previously study in English must complete language requirements described in II.9.3 of the catalog by taking one of the following tests TOEFL, TOEIC, IELTS, Cambridge Exam, and CEFR

            For the EMBA

  1. Applicants must have one of the following: a bachelor degree or an equivalent from an accredited or an authorized university
  2. Applicants with an undergraduate GPA lower than 2.50 or with an undergraduate degree from an unaccredited university will take either the Nova International University (NIU) Graduate Study Aptitude Test (GSAT), the GMA,  or the GRE. The NIU GSAT is given online and is more affordable when compared to the GMAT or the GRE.
  3. A resume (or a curriculum vitae) detailing work experiences, skills, and education
  4. An essay/letter describing the reasons why the candidate has decided to apply for admission into the program (one to two pages)
  5. Applicants who did not previously study in English must complete language requirements described in II.9.3 of the catalog by taking one of the following tests TOEFL,TOEIC, IELTS, Cambridge Exam, CEFR, or the NIU English Test.
  6. Applicants must submit two letters of recommendations (in the form provided by the university) written by previous teachers, mentors, supervisors, co-workers, or managers.

Bachelor Degree and Associate Degree Program Admission Requirements

Students must have a high school diploma, an equivalent, or an equivalent of post junior high school education combined with work experience. Students who have failed the Baccalauréat (French speaking countries’ final degree for exiting high school education) or its equivalent in English may have to take a Nova International University entrance Examination and complete the US GED online.

Applicants who did not previously study in English must complete language requirements described in II.9.3 of the NIU catalog by taking one of the following tests TOEFL, TOEIC, IELTS, Cambridge Exam, and CEFR. In Principle students must have taken at least one course in English vocabulary and grammar with at least 40 contact hours and past the TOEFL with at least 550 in the writing test. Students scoring above 500 will be granted conditional admission and will have to take an intensive English training at Nova International University.  They may also take the Nova International University English Aptitude Test.

Students may transfer from other colleges or universities going through the NIU transfer policies. All transfer students need to complete 25% of the program at NIU.

 Transfer of Credits

Transfer of credits from a government approved university, an accredited university, and an accredited program are accepted in a case by case basis. NIU has to make sure that the courses being transferred are equivalent of NIU courses within the program being transferred to. In general no student will be able to transfer more than 75% of a degree requirement to NIU. When students submit a transfer of credits from a university that may not meet the minimum criteria described above, applicants may take an examination for each course. There is a low fee required for such examination.
